Minutes
Pennsylvania Sociological Society Business Meeting
October 23, 2010
Mansfield University, Mansfield PA

The Business Meeting was called to order at 4:55 pm by outgoing president Barbara Denison (Shippensburg University). After introduction, we turned to the meeting report. The consensus was the meeting was a success in terms of content – “the keynote speakers were great” seemed to sum up the sentiment of all present. Thanks to Jan Purk of Mansfield and her colleagues, students and the catering staff for making us so welcome and the meeting so enjoyable. One idea raised for future meetings was a possible graduate paper competition to entice more graduate students to attend. Denison reported Chip Gallagher was thinking about LaSalle hosting the meeting, perhaps in 2012.

Outgoing treasurer Marianne Goodfellow (Lebanon Valley College) gave the treasurer’s report, noting her concern that over the past four consecutive years the treasury’s balance prior to the conference has been going steadily downward. A dues increase for 2012 was discussed but not settled.

The results of this year’s election are:

President-elect – Jan Purk, Mansfield University
Vice President – Chip Gallagher, LaSalle University
Treasurer (three year term) – Bill Murphy, Commonwealth of PA (retired, University of Pittsburgh and Antioch College.
Ellen Gunther continues as secretary for 2 more years.

Old Business: Barbara Denison was empowered to ask Shippensburg to store the PSS archives which were cleaned up and archived under Chad Kimmel’s presidency last year. There being no other business old or new, President Susan Eichenberger of Seton Hill University called for adjournment at 5:25 pm

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Denison (for Ellen Gunther)
