ASA Guidelines
Submission of Manuscripts to
SOCIOLOGICAL VIEWPOINTSSubscription to the journal is included in the annual membership dues of the Pennsylvania Sociological Society. Individual copies and institutional copies may be purchased by contacting the editor.
Manuscripts on all facets of sociology are accepted for review. This includes theoretical as well as applied papers. Manuscripts from related disciplines (criminology, political science, social work, etc.) are also considered provided they have sociological content.
The following guidelines should be followed by all authors submitting manuscripts for publication consideration:
- E-mail a copy of the manuscript, including an abstract of approximately 150 words. The manuscript should be submitted in Word (.doc or .docx) format.
- Manuscripts must not exceed 20 double-spaced pages of text. The 20-page limit does not include title page, bibliography, or other front and end matter. Twelve point font, in a style such as Times New Roman or Calibri should be used, as well as 1-inch margins all around (top, bottom, left, and right).
- Citations and bibliography should conform to the style adopted by the American Sociological Association. The link for ASA style format is at the top of this page.
- The manuscript should include a title page that is absent of any identification of the author(s) for the purpose of review. Also, there must not be any mention of the author or authors in the headings or any other part of the manuscript.
- A letter must accompany the manuscript that includes the name(s) of the author(s), a contact person who will be responsible for editing changes, an institutional address or affiliation, telephone number, and e-mail address. This will facilitate contacting the author(s) before, during, and following the peer review process.
- Tables, charts, and figures must be camera-ready and no larger than in a 4.5 x 7 inch format. Tables, charts, and figures should only be submitted if they enhance the manuscript. Large tables cannot be used if the numerals become unreasonably small or difficult to include in the text.
- Upon publication, the Pennsylvania Sociological Society owns publication rights to the manuscript, but authors retain rights to use their articles and reviews for future publications which they may author or edit.
- Nonmembers of the Pennsylvania Sociological Society must provide a $10 review fee at the time their manuscript is submitted, payable to the Pennsylvania Sociological Society. This should be sent to the editor at the address below via snail mail. The article cannot be sent out for review until the editor has received the fee from nonmembers.
Completed manuscripts that meet these criteria should be e-mailed to the editor of Sociological Viewpoints at the following address:
